Help save one of Europe's largest carbon stores
The North Pennines team is internationally recognised as a leader in the field of peatland restoration.
Home to some of the rarest peatland habitat in the world, and a crucial carbon store, the team has been hard at work recovering this resource for almost 20 years.
It takes years of building knowledge, trust, and experience to handle such a complex process - complete with sophisticated surveying and monitoring techniques.
But the team need your help.

National and international significance
The United Kingdom has about 12% of Europe’s peatlands and 13% of the that is internationally rare: the blanket bog.
The North Pennines has almost 30% of England’s blanket bog and contains the largest area of contiguous bog in England.
At over 100,000 ha, the North Pennines National Landscape peatland complex is one the largest bogs and carbon stores in Europe.
Almost 10,000 km of drains have been cut into these peatlands over the last 60 years in an attempt to make them more agriculturally productive. This drainage has left the peat bog damaged and in a deteriorating condition, emitting carbon rather than sequestering it.
North Pennines peatlands provide numerous ecosystem services including carbon storage and sequestration, water resources, wildlife habitat and flood amelioration. It is important, therefore, to restore this habitat and increase the resilience of peatlands against an unpredictable climate future.
The objectives of the Peatland Program
The Peatland Program has four basic objectives:
- Restoration: Managing peatland restoration
- Research: Supporting and disseminating new and existing research
- Celebration: Raising awareness, appreciation and understanding of peatlands
- Promoting best practice: Provision of peatland management advice

How you can help
Through the Pennine PeatLIFE project, we are working with the International Union for Conservation of Nature UK (IUCN UK) Peatland Programme to trial and further develop the government-backed UK Peatland Code.
